Nuts for Health and Beauty

Nuts and seeds are good for your health. But aside from filling a hunger gap with good fats, fiber and protein, they can help make skin supple, smooth and younger looking. With the help of holistic nutritionist Julie Mancuso of JMNutrition.info, we uncover the health and beauty secrets behind these yummy, crunchy power foods.

BEAUTY AND HEALTH BENEFITS OF ALMONDS
Almonds are packed full of fiber (something most of us lack), protein and essential fatty acids -- all of which help promote a healthy heart and help reduce blood pressure, says Mancuso. But an added bonus is that this nut’s essential fatty acids are known to help reduce swelling and inflammation. "Nuts and seeds, particularly almonds, are a natural anti-inflammatory, so they also can help treat skin disorders such as acne, psoriasis and eczema," Mancuso explains. So if you want to keep your breakouts to a minimum, munching on some almonds may help.

BEAUTY AND HEALTH BENEFITS OF PUMPKIN SEEDS
Pumpkin seeds, or pepitas, are the unsung beauty hero in the world of nuts and seeds. Packed full of vitamin E, zinc and magnesium, these seeds will keep your skin glowing, promote regeneration of skin cells and fight off bacteria that may lead to acne. "Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant," says Mancuso. "It helps skin repair itself quickly." And zinc has long been a remedy for acne sufferers. Pumpkin seeds are also a protein powerhouse (about 5 grams in 1 ounce), which also can help with cell regeneration. Who could ask for more from such a tasty little seed?

BEAUTY AND HEALTH BENEFITS OF WALNUTS
The slightly bitter walnut can give your mood a boost with its abundance of fatty acids, which have shown to be critical to the brain's nerve cells. "A lack in fatty acids may lead to depression and mood disorders," explains Mancuso. Choosing 1/4 cup of walnuts for a snack can give you nearly 95 percent of your daily omega-3 requirements. These brain-friendly nuts are also full of B vitamins, which are particularly great for your skin. "B vitamins help with stress management and mood, and and prevent skin disorders," says Mancuso. Because a handful of walnuts can reduce stress, they can, in turn, keep those wrinkles and fine lines at bay.

BEAUTY AND HEALTH BENEFITS OF PECANS
A handful of pecans can help you meet your daily recommended fiber requirements, with about 2.7 grams of fiber in 1 ounce. And fiber can do wonders for your health. Fiber essentially takes out the garbage. "It helps with the elimination of toxins and waste," explains Mancuso. It's essential for a good digestive system and your beauty routine. Just think: All those toxins inside reflect your outside appearance. Your skin can suffer, causing breakouts, dullness and excess oil. So why wouldn't you eat more fiber to look better, especially when it comes in the form of flavorful pecans?

BEAUTY AND HEALTH BENEFITS OF SUNFLOWER SEEDS
These tiny seeds boast some big benefits, despite their diminutive size. A handful of sunflower seeds can curb your hunger pangs for a couple of hours because they are loaded with protein. They also can prevent your mid-afternoon work meltdown. These seeds are a great source of magnesium, as well -- a mineral shown to calm your nerves, muscles and blood vessels, which in turn means better blood flow to your skin. That's a key element to youthful skin. Plus, with calm nerves, those frown lines won't be appearing quite so quickly.

GUIDELINES FOR EATING NUTS AND SEEDS
Here are Mancuso’s tips for incorporating nuts and seeds into your diet.
Nuts and seeds are best eaten raw and unsalted.
Store nuts and seeds in the refrigerator or freezer to preserve freshness.
If you enjoy nuts and seeds roasted, roast them yourself in the oven.
If you can’t eat nuts and seeds without salt, buy them raw, roast them and sprinkle on a pinch of sea salt.
Nuts and seeds make a great addition to salads (instead of croutons), stir-fries and oatmeal.
Nut butters are easier to digest.
Although nuts and seeds offer many benefits, too much of this good thing can wreak havoc on your waistline and digestion. Stick to 1 to 2 ounces per day.

Tip of the Month

Best brow practices for the sweltering summer heat

Anyone who has ever sat through a melting mid-July heat wave knows that not all makeup is built to withstand the summertime.

When it comes to brow maintenance, not all of us immediately wonder what will come of our pencils once the thermostat breaks 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Much to the dismay of many fans of the strong, bold brow, many standard brow products look positively melty in the hot, hot heat.

Fortunately, there's a market for water-resistant formulas where our arches are concerned, and Blinc Eyebrow Mousse has sought to eliminate many of the same day-long concerns.

Unlike standard eyebrow pencils, Blinc Eyebrow Mousse lends color and volume to sparse-looking brows in a smudge proof, water-resistant formula that maintains brow shape throughout the day. The formula is packed with conditioning and anti-aging properties to benefit the skin below.

Are You Confused About Sunscreen??

Well if you said "yes" you are not alone. I think it is one of the most confusing and misleading subjects out there. This is my opinion from all the research I have done:

There is a difference between chemical sunscreens and physical blocks. Chemical sunscreens contain chemicals which have been found to be more harmful than the sun exposure by itself. Physical blocks normally contain a titanium dioxide/zinc combination that reflects both types of rays (UVA and UVB) while also giving you a beautiful, glowing and healthy tan.

I am not a fan of chemical sunscreen, I feel that we are bombarding our body with chemicals which have to absorb into our skin in order to work and what does our body have to do to get rid of it? It has to be processed through our kidneys and liver (which already has a tough enough job), it also collects in our fat cells which leads to cellulite and trapped toxins in our lymphatic system. If you do choose to use chemical sunscreens please don’t be fooled into the "higher the SPF the better....", anything over a 30 SPF is just more chemicals without a significant increase in protection.

Remember that sunscreens block your body’s natural production of vitamin D. But in situations where you must be out in the sun long enough to burn, be sure to use a product that protects against both UVA and UVB, such as Natural Sunscreen (physical blocks), which uses a titanium dioxide/zinc combination that reflects both types of rays. To read more about top rated sunscreens and harmful affects of chemicals, go to the Environmental Working Group website: www.ewg.org

How to Select Sunscreen

SkinCancerNet Article
Dermatologists caution: Look at more than SPF
The choice of sunscreens can be overwhelming, especially during the summer months. Walk down any store aisle stocked with sunscreen, and you may see SPFs that range from single to triple digits. Some sunscreens offer broad-spectrum protection. Others include insect repellant. You also are likely to find some bottles labeled sunscreen, while others read sunspray, suncream, or sunblock. Our 4-point checklist tells you what to look for.
4-Point Checklist
bullet
SPF of 30 or greater
Short for “Sun Protection Factor,” the SPF tells you how well a product blocks ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, also known as the rays that cause sunburn.

An SPF of 15 screens 93% of the UVB rays and an SPF of 30 screens 97% of the UVB rays. While a sunscreen with a higher SPF can be beneficial for people with very fair complexions and those visiting a tropical or sun-intense region, even sunscreen with an extremely high SPF cannot screen out 100% of UVB rays.

SPF does not equal how many hours one can stay in the sun without burning.
To protect your skin, sunscreen must be reapplied approximately every 2 hours even on cloudy days — and after swimming, sweating, or toweling off.

bullet
Broad-spectrum protection
Since SPF only indicates UVB protection, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends broad-spectrum sunscreen. “Broad spectrum” means the sunscreen also offers protection from ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, which are the rays that age the skin. The label may say, “broad spectrum” or “UVA and UVB protection.”
UVA protection is extremely important. UVA rays penetrate the skin more deeply than UVB rays. Exposure to UVA can lead to wrinkles and other signs of aging. Both UVA and UVB rays can cause skin cancer. Be sure to purchase a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection.

bullet
Water-resistant
All sunscreens wash, rub, or sweat off, so there really is no such thing as “waterproof” sunscreen. A sunscreen can be “water-resistant.” This means the product stays on the skin longer if it gets wet. You will need to reapply water-resistant sunscreen, too. Be sure to reapply approximately every 2 hours and after swimming, sweating, and toweling off. Each time you apply the sunscreen, be sure to apply generously.

bullet
Make sure you like the product
Dermatologists often say that the best sunscreen is the one that you will use. Whether you buy a lotion, spray, gel, wax stick, or cream really is a matter of personal preference. Just make sure that you like it.
********************
Other Tips
  • Buy a product for your lips. Skin cancer can develop on the lips, too — and be quite aggressive. The thought of applying the sunscreen that you just rubbed on the rest of your skin can be unappealing. Some sun-protection products are formulated specifically for the lips, and some lip balms offer sun protection. Be sure to select one that offers an SPF of at least 30 and broad-spectrum protection.

  • Buy insect repellant separately. While a product that contains insect repellant and sunscreen can be convenient, dermatologists generally recommend buying sunscreen and insect repellant separately. Sunscreens should be applied liberally approximately every 2 hours, but insect repellant should be applied sparingly every 6 hours. Applying a product that contains insect repellant too often can increase the risk of toxicity. Waiting 6 hours to reapply sunscreen limits sun protection.

  • Makeup with an SPF has limits. Makeup that offers an SPF of 30 or greater and broad-spectrum coverage is ideal for incidental sun exposure (exposure you get every day without thinking about it, such as walking to and from your car).

If you expect to be in the sun for longer than 10 to 15 minutes, dermatologists generally recommend applying sunscreen under your makeup — even if the makeup has an SPF. The sunscreen should offer an SPF of 30 or greater, UVA and UVB protection, and water resistance. And, yes, the sunscreen should be reapplied approximately every 2 hours and after sweating, swimming, or toweling off. Sunscreen tends to break down over time and rub off with normal wear.
    ********************
Sun exposure is the most preventable risk factor for all skin cancers, including melanoma. It is important to know that wearing sunscreen alone does not offer 100% protection from the sun. Seeking shade during peak daylight hours and wearing sun protective clothing also are important.

April is National Rosacea Awareness Month

Rosacea is a common skin disorder that causes chronic inflammation to the cheeks, nose, forehead, eyelids, and chin. It is most common in patients with fair skin and can be associated with skin disorders such as acne and seborrhea. Fortunately, Rosacea is controllable, but unfortunately, not curable. Flare-ups vary for each individual so it is best to identify and avoid possible triggers. The most common irritants to Rosacea are stress, alcohol, smoking, and long periods in hot, sunny weather.
The actual cause of Rosacea is unknown. Treatment varies based on the degree of infection of the skin, usually involving long term antibiotic therapy. To decrease flare-ups it is best to avoid excessive alcohol intake and smoking, always apply a daily SPF, use products made specifically for sensitive skin types, and maintain a stress free environment. If you are unaware of your triggers you can keep a journal, which will allow you to identify lifestyle and environmental factors that affect your condition.

The Ins and Outs of Chemical Peels

The Rhonda Allison"Apple Wine Peel".
Apple Wine Peel has little or no down time. This is considered a "progressive" peel with regenerative qualities with Vitamin A and lactic acid for a smooth, clear, hydrated "lift'. $99 (reg $125)

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a technique which involves the application of a variety of chemical solutions to remove the damaged outer layers of dead skin cells from the skin’s surface. It is extremely beneficial for many skin conditions such as hyperpigmentation, rosacea, acne, sun damage, and photo aging. By removing the build-up of dead skin cells and stimulating the regenerative process, you will notice marked improvements in the formation of wrinkles and fine lines, texture and tone of the skin, hydration, reduced pore size, clearing of blemishes and more balanced oil production and an overall healthier skin appearance.

What are the different types of peels?

Most of the peels we deal with at Metamorphosis are considered superficial; they do not penetrate beyond the epidermis or papillary dermis. They are not to be confused with medical or physician-strength peels that affect the reticular dermis. I have received many questions from my clients on "what is a peel" ? Here is a description if you want to know more.

PROGRESSIVE

This refers to a treatment that does not usually cause immediate exfoliation and only removes the outer layer of skin or the stratum corneum. As treatments are repeated, the skin will experience a mild sloughing.

MID-DEPTH

These peels affect the intra-epidermal layer, and exfoliation occurs within two to three days after application. The skin goes through very little down time. Peeling consists of light flaking similar to a sunburn peel.

DEEP

These peels affect the deepest intra-epidermal layers. The skin becomes brown and crusty then undergoes considerable peeling, which occurs three to four days after application. The skin peels in large segments as opposed to flaking. The entire process takes about seven to ten days.

Physiological Seasonal Skin Changes and Sensitivities

Many people experience seasonal sensitivity/allergy with their skin when seasons change. Seasonal sensitivity can be frustrating if you don't know the cause of your skin problems; it can create additional stress that may aggravate the existing condition. What can an affected person do?

First of all, try to determine whether you have seasonal sensitivity:

Do you have the following symptoms?

1. Rough skin
2. Dull skin tone
3. Skin turns slightly red compared to usual
4. Rash or itchiness
5. Eczema
6. Recurring dryness and flakiness despite using moisturizers
7. Oiliness and breakouts
8. Deep cleansing facial masks and scrubs did not improve condition but made it worse.

The Reasons

If you have 3 or more of the above symptoms, your skin may be prone to seasonal allergies that occur typically around autumn, when humidity in the air decreases. The air is drier than in the summer, and can cause irritations for sensitive skin. The bad news is, sensitivity tends to reoccur with season changes. The good news is, you can also do something about it!

Cleansing

Skin tends to become drier in autumn. As in all seasons, choose a mild cleanser that will thoroughly remove makeup (double cleansing) but will not strip away skin’s essential moisture. And as a rule, don't overdo it! Cleansing twice a day is generally enough.

Toning

For toners, choose a product that is non-drying, hydrating and can strengthen the moisture barrier of your skin.

Moisturizing

As the air gets dry, the level of moisture your skin is exposed to will decrease. Dehydration can cause your sebum glands to secrete excessive oil, which can clog pores and lead to acne. Choosing a hydrosol-based toner and moisturizer that will keep skin hydrated for a long time is essential in maintaining healthy looking, blemish-free skin. For moisturizers, pick a product that is hydrosol-based and non-greasy (mineral oil and Vaseline) to balance against excessive sebum secretion, replenishing your skin with moisture. If you have very dry or dehydrated skin, using a moisturizing mask 2 to 3 times a day can also fortify the moisture barrier of your skin. Essence sheet masks are also an ideal way of infusing your skin with moisture as they are easily absorbed and penetrate deeper into your skin's layers.

Keep irritants at bay

Desperate people do desperate things. At the first sign of acne, many people will resort to using the harshest cleansers and masks to help unclog pores, unaware of the cause of the breakout in the first place. Products that are acidic can cause irritations to skin that is prone to seasonal allergies and sensitivity. Many deep cleansing/pore refining scrubs, clay masks, and treatment products contain harsh alpha hydroxy or beta hydroxy acids which can aggravate the condition, making your skin worse than before. If your skin is prone to seasonal sensitivity and allergies, switch to a product line that is mild and non-irritating when seasons change to lower your sensitivity. Stay away from products containing alpha or beta hydroxy acids until your condition improves and your skin returns to normal.

Although hot water does not contain irritants, it can become an irritant when used on sensitive skin. Avoid hot baths and using hot water to wash your face since hot water can dilate your pores and irritate your skin. Also, cleanse any hair products thoroughly and avoid leaving residue on your face when showering.

A filtering shower head will help eliminate chlorine and other harmful water contents that can be drying to skin. Using a toner after washing will remove water components that are also detrimental to skin if allowed to remain and penetrate.

Update your skin's wardrobe

Just like clothes, different seasons call for different needs. If you are prone to seasonal allergies/sensitivity, you may want to update your skin's wardrobe when the climate becomes drier. Most beauty-savvy women will have 2 sets of skin care: one for spring/summer, and another for autumn/winter. For Spring/Summer, choose a refreshing line of products since the humidity in the air is higher; and for Autumn/Winter, choose a more moisturizing line to keep skin hydrated. No matter what you choose, make sure that the product line you choose is right for your age and skin type!

The Solutions

Seasonal changes can cause serious damage to your skin. Follow these helpful hints to keep your skin healthy and beautiful all winter long, and be sure to schedule regular appointments with your skin care specialist.

• Proper moisture balance—As the air gets colder and drier, your skin begins to lose moisture. This can cause flaking, chaffing, peeling and redness. There¬fore, it is very important to keep skin moisturized all winter long, regardless of your skin type. Give your skin a boost with a deep-penetrating nourishing mask to help maintain your skin’s hydration. Misting several times a day, just one or two spritzes, with a hydrosol will deeply hydrate tissues. A whole house humidifier, or even a room one, will add needed moisture back into the dry winter air.

• Avoiding breakouts—Many skin types react to the cold weather by over-producing oil in an effort to compensate for moisture loss. This overproduction can lead to an increase in acne as pores clog with sebum. This is why it is vital to listen to your skin care special¬ist, and follow the skin care routine she prescribes. Keep in mind that without proper exfoliation, dead skin cells and sebum will clog pores, increasing acne flare ups, redness and the possibility of infection.

• Perk up dull skin—The colder weather can leave your skin looking dull and worn. Proper cleansing, toning, exfoliation and treatment will help rejuvenate tired looking skin. Nourish your skin with nutrient-rich moisturizers for a soft, dewy look.

• Wear an SPF—Although it may not seem necessary to wear an SPF during the winter months, it is necessary. Harmful UV rays penetrate your skin year-round, and protection is the key to maintaining healthy skin and helping to prevent fine lines and wrinkles, age spots and even cancer. Use an SPF of 15 or higher.

From A Dermalogical Study: Seasonal variability in the biophysical properties of the stratum corneum from different anatomical sites. Three different anatomical sites (calf, inner forearm and crow's foot wrinkle area of the face) were assessed in February, April, July and December of the same year. The assessments made were skin surface hydration using an electrical capacitance technique, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) by evaporimetry, number of corneocytes released using a turbine stimulation method, and skin surface topography using optical profilometry.

The results showed significant anatomical differences: with the crow's foot site > forearm > calf, for skin surface hydration and corneocyte numbers; and the crow's foot site > forearm and calf, with no difference between the latter two sites, for TEWL measurements. With these techniques, seasonal differences were observed mainly in the calf, to a lesser extent in the forearm, but not in the crow's foot area. These mainly involved increases in these three parameters in July, as opposed to the other time-points. Parameters of skin surface topography however, showed no consistent seasonal pattern, but markedly higher values were observed for the forearm in comparison to the calf and crow's foot sites, which were similar. From meteorological data obtained, the average daily maximum temperature and hours of sunshine increased to peak values in July, as did the absolute humidity derived from relative humidity data.

We conclude that the results are most likely to represent changes in the SC due to climatic factors, with the calf and forearm sites being most affected in comparison to the face (crow's foot wrinkle area), which seems unaffected. The reasons for this latter site remaining unchanged may be due to its greater UV exposure, sebum content, and that the use of facial cosmetics was allowed.
